    GOLD CLUB

The Fishtown AC Alumni Association would like to take this time to sincerely thank you for your generosity over the years. Because of your loyalty and dedication you have been entered into a new “club” that has been designed to recognize such loyal and generous members.

This GOLD CLUB is exclusive only to those members whose generosity exceeds the norm. Because of your special generosity we have continued to award scholarships to those gifted students, and because of your dedication and loyalty, we should be able to continue the process.

Please accept on behalf of your Alumni this jacket signifying that you are now an exclusive member to the Fishtown AC Alumni’s GOLD CLUB. This club is very small now, but we’re hoping that through your example more members join you in this distinction.

I’m sure that by wearing this jacket you are showing everyone what true dedication and conscientiousness really means. I know the scholarship winners will agree.

So, in closing, Welcome to this exclusive club and enjoy wearing the jacket, knowing that your dedication is etched in the smiling faces of each scholarship award winner over the years and also those to come. Keep up the great work!!

    Yours in Sports,
    Jack Moore Chairman

GOLDEN DECAL SUPPORTERS CLUB

Thank you Members for all that you have done.
Hard times are now turned into times of pride.
All this we managed with you by our side,
Nor could we otherwise this course have run.
Kindness isn't tendered on demand:
You gave with love, not merely out of duty.
Our days are daily burnished by that beauty.
Upon your love we now proudly stand.

"THANK YOU" ERIE LANES
For giving us the chance to continue our education.
From Each Scholarship Winner
1994 to 2008 so far....

PLEASE VISIT OUR PLAQUE WHEN YOU ARE AT ERIE LANES

We have dedicated this plaque to all of those good hearted people from the Monday Night Early League Bowlers that have been the back bone and the heart and soul of our Scholarship Fund from September 12, 1992 to December 20, 1999 these people took $52,000 in 50-50's. Yes that is right $26,000 went into our scholarship fund. Please we invite you to stop by the desk to see and read our plaque with the names of all our award winners from each year. And realize that these Children are getting the chance to get another year of schooling because of you!
THANK YOU and God bless you always.

To all of the Employes, Managers, But mainly the Bowlers of these leagues
"From the children" The Alumni Staff and every member of the Fishtown A. C. Alumni.
We will never forget you for your love and caring and all of your wonderful kindness over those eight years.
Jack Moore

~ OBITUARIES ~

~ "GONE BUT NEVER FORGOTTEN" ~

I'd like to leave an afterglow of smiles when life is done.
I'd like to leave an echo whispering softly down the ways.
Of happy times and laughing times and bright and sunny days.
I'd like the tears of those who grieve, to dry before
the sun of happy memories that I leave when life is done.

In the midst of a spring cleaning overhaul in the McIntyre home, a dusty baseball was uncovered. “My son asked me about it, and I couldn’t believe it, I hadn’t seen that ball in years,” beamed an excited Matt McIntyre. The ball in question was scoffed and worn, its surface covered with signatures. It was a game ball from the 1983 Department of Recreation City Championship, a game won by the Fishtown Athletic Club’s (FAC) 16-19 year old baseball team.

After speaking with McIntyre about his piece of rediscovered history, we struck on the idea that a 25 year tribute to the 1983 team was in order, and got together with team manager Bob McGee and coach Jack Moore (Chairman of the FAC Alumni).

Our meeting just happened to fall on the first official day of summer, a fitting coincidence to discuss what McGee dubbed “the Fishtown boys of summer,” back-to-back winning teams from 1982 and 1983, over some cold beer.

1982
Although we had initially planned to looking back only on the 25 year anniversary 1983 team, it soon became clear that their story began during the ’82 season, and leaving them out would be impossible. “I had no idea what to expect coming in as manager, as far as what kind of players, talent, and personalities would be on the team,” remembers McGee (who was aided by Moore, Buchannan (Yogi) and Tom Furphy).

What he got was a skilled group of experienced high school players from North Catholic, Frankford, Mastbaum, and other local schools. It was an amazing combination of skill and a love for the game that would ultimately propel the team to great heights.

“Half way through the season we knew that we had something special,” says Moore, “and after overcoming a few hiccups they just continued to improve.” “They were a team of pure athletes, and they had all been coached and groomed for varsity play at their respective schools,” explains McGee, “they had the fundamentals down, and there was such a sense of maturity on the field.”

One the mound, the FAC had multiple weapons: the one-two punch of John Lewis, a 6-4 fast ball hurler, and Vinne Ciaramella and Tommie Cotton, crafty pitchers with a lot of movement on their throws. If they needed some extra juice they could always call in shortstop Gene Bryan to take up the job as well.
Offensively, they were a powerhouse that opposing teams could find no answer to. Robbie Gerold, Joey Allen, and Gene Bryan, John Weick, and Mike Valentino led the attack. “It seemed like the entire team could hit,” comments McIntyre.

The Department of Recreation City Championship brought the FAC up against a talented Roxborough team, who they beat in the thrilling offensive fashion of 14-13, in a game McIntyre describes as “a slugfest.” Their prize for defeating Roxborough was a trip to Veteran’s Stadium, where they would compete for the Junior Baseball Federation Championship against geographical rival Juniata.

“You should’ve seen the crowd that came out for that, it was great,” remembers Moore, “one section from Juniata and the other from Fishtown, and they went wild.” Shifting from their explosive run parade to an impressive defensive performance, the FAC pulled out another victory (10-5), and capped off an incredible season, complete with dual championships. 1983

While the ‘82 team was a tight knit group with experience and talent, the ‘83 lineup was a far different picture. There were less high school players, and the composition was much younger. What they may have lacked in pure skill, the ‘83 squad made up for in personality and heart. “They had a whole other look,” explains Moore, “they were looser, and sillier. “To be honest, expectations weren’t nearly as high as they had been the previous year,” admits McGee, “I would be watching the games, thinking they wouldn’t have enough to scrap together a win, but somehow they just stayed in games. They had fight to them, and it meant the difference a lot of times.”

Steve Gough, Bob Browne, Joe Carr, Tom Cotton, made up the nucleus of the pitching staff on this reshaped team, and offensively the FAC relied heavily on the power of Cotton and Bob Browne, a left hander who McIntyre says “could drive the ball a mile.” “I was lucky,” says McIntyre, “to be able to learn firsthand from the teams leading up to when I was actually playing in 1983. Those guys taught me so much.”

One of those guys was Bill Francisco, who McIntyre and the coaches remember as a fearless base runner who came through in clutch situations. With only a handful of returning champions, though, the team demanded its younger players step up, and they rose to the occasion. Defying the odds against them, they went on to claim victory in the Department of Recreation Championship against Bridesburg, a feat few predicted.

Some crafty coaching helped the FAC take the win: a designed play in which one base runner allowed himself to be picked off in order to advance another runner worked not once, but twice. Due to a restructuring of playoff rules, they were unable to compete for the Junior Baseball Federation Championship as they did the year before. Despite this restriction, the squad was ecstatic and rightfully proud of their accomplishment.

“To be able to manage a team that is able to go out there and win a championship is a once in a lifetime experience,” reflects McGee, “and I was able to do it twice in a row.” Looking Back Sitting around with Moore, McGee, and McIntyre, it was easy to see the camaraderie built through sport. Here were three generations of Fishtown players, and three generations of great bar stories.

Moore actually coached McGee in 1967, a team that also made it to a championship game. It was in that game that McGee would get his first taste of coaching, whether he wanted to or not. “There was a call that got Jack and the other coaches all riled up, and one by one they were all thrown out of the game. ‘Well, you better coach,’ Jack told me, so that was my baptism by fire into the coaching world.”
The coaches were always looking for opportunities to get the Fishtown teams practice against other teams, and they would sometimes take teams down to play the prison team at Gratersford prison in what McIntyre refers to as “the original scared straight.” Moore retells one of the more memorable moments: “I was coaching third base and I remember hearing something. Now, all the way out past the outfield is the prison, and I looked up the wall and there was this hand sticking out through the bars of a window waving, and this guy is screaming Jaaaaaackie Moooooooore.” A true fan enjoying an upper deck view.

A fact that will come to no surprise to anyone who’s played a sport is that some of the most memorable moments occur not on the field, but between the innings and games. Friendships are crafted and memories forged through the camaraderie experienced.
This is evident listening to Moore, McGee, and McIntyre trade stories across the table, as is their respect for one another and the guys that they called teammate or coach. McIntyre says: “I had the time of my life playing ball back then with those guys. And Jack and Bob taught me a lot…about baseball and life.”

Perhaps Moore manages to put it most eloquently when I ask about the role of sport in the grand scheme of things: “The kids that played for me, they were my life. They were my kids. People sometimes ask why I never had any kids. I tell them that I have a thousand.”
With a thousand kids, and an bottomless pool of memories to draw from, what’s the difference between one or two seasons? McGee answers for Moore, smiling, “There are some seasons that are unforgettable, and ’82 and ’83 are two of them.”
